French bulldogs or “Frenchies” as they are at times referred to are companion dogs that are very good for
families especially those with young children.
These dogs are very affectionate and gentle with kids and you do not need to worry that the dog will harm your
child during play.
Frenchies are not very fast learners and training them will require you to have a lot of patience. These dogs
need to be taught about boundaries when they are still new in the family and will be useful to prevent some bad
behaviour that may arise later.
Potty training in French bulldogs is one aspect of training that is of uttermost importance. Choose a good spot
for the Frenchie to eliminate. When the dog needs to potty take him to this designate spot and wait till the dog
has eliminated before going back to the house.
Establish a schedule, stick to it and make it part of your routine. If your bulldog makes a mess, just clean it
up real well. Do not punish the dog, some French bulldogs may take some time to get used to the schedule. Be
persistent and don’t give up and soon enough, they will catch on.
French bulldogs, like other bulldogs have several dog behaviour problems such as
chronic chewing and a tendency to bark excessively. Such behaviours should be controlled at an early stage as they
will only become worse as the dog grows older. Chronic chewing can be controlled by offering the dog acceptable
objects to chew such as bones and chew toys. Ensure that the French bulldog gets enough exercise so that some of
that destructive energy is spent.
Behaviour training is also another way of solving behaviour problems shown by this breed. You can learn about
this by attending dog training classes or reading books.
An obedient dog is one who will comply with your commands and do it immediately you give the command. French
bulldogs only need to learn basic commands unless they are to be show dogs in which case some more complex commands
may be taught.
When training your dog, the key to success is establishing a communication link. Your dog will only be able to
follow commands issued if he understands what they mean. You can use hand signals to demonstrate what you want the
dog to do, and in some cases you might require to act the part.
Issue commands in a clear voice as the tone of your voice also matters a lot. Be careful not to use the wrong
tone since it sends the wrong message to the dog. One typical problem that I noticed in French bulldogs is that
they will at times prefer to relax rather than trouble themselves to do what you want. Do not let him ignore you as
this only encourages such behaviour.
Give your dog a slight push or tug when you have to; just don’t go overboard. You need to show your French
bulldog that instructions should be followed. French bulldogs love attention and are people pleasers. You should
reward the dog generously for behaving well and the dog will want to please you because of the rewards it will get.
This will thus motivate them to do better.
Finally, never lose your temper when dealing with them. They are very sensitive to negative reinforcement and
this will only distress them.
