Pomeranian Dog Allergies - What You Can Do to
Prevent Them
Pomeranian dogs are great for apartment living, especially if you are a senior citizen who enjoys company. These
small toy dogs love being inside with you and are very active.
The Pom weighs approximately six pounds and can live up to 15 years old. They do not need a big yard to play in
just a walk once a day will keep them content. The Poms are independent and yet easy to care for and will give you
hours of enjoyment.
The Pomeranians are picky eaters so it is important to find one that works with your dog.
If you own a Pom you know just how lively they can be so if you find your little pooch under the weather or
itchy then you many want to look at Pomeranian Dog allergies and what you can do to prevent them.
One of the best ways to avoid allergies is to find the cause and eliminate it from your dog’s life. There are
really only two types of allergies that your Pom can have; the outside the body causing irritant, and the allergy
inside the body type. By carefully paying attention to how your dog is acting you will be able to identify the
symptoms and determine which it is.
The Inside Of Your Dog Allergy
If your Pomeranian is showing signs of mucus from the nose, wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath, the
chances are the he is having a reaction to something he has eaten. Have you changed your dog food or added something to it? If your dog is also
vomiting and has diarrhea then something needs to be done immediately, as this type of dog can go downhill quickly
from dehydration and weight loss.
A way to tell if it is the dog food is to remove all food and feed him plain white chicken and rice with no
additives including butter. Once he is stabilized then add a single item every two weeks until you have an allergy
free dog diet. Another good idea is to cook their meals.
The Outside Of Your Dog Allergy
The outside of the body allergy is most likely the dog shampoo that you are using. If the Pom is itchy and is
scratching a lot it will be an indication that something is bothering his skin. Change dog shampoos to a shampoo
that is allergenic free, and see if the symptoms clear up.
It may be a couple of weeks before it completely goes away. If your dog sleeps on your bed with you, the sheets
may need to wash in a non-allergenic clothes soap to prevent any further attacks. Also check his bedding as this
may too require a change.
Pomeranian dog allergies can be hard on your dog, so take extra care to let him rest often and have plenty of
water on hand. If the symptoms do not clear up be sure to your vet for a follow-up of what has been done. Be
patient and within a couple of weeks he will be back to his spunky old self.
