All About Dog Skin Disease Problems
There are some things that a dog might suffer from that humans would rarely consider. Skin problems are one of
the most common dog health issues and can
represent a significant problem if not dealt with early and thoroughly.
There are many forms of skin disease for a dog. The simplest are often related to basic allergies. An inhalant,
flea, or food allergy will often create a problem with their skin that can lead to dryness, hot spots, or biting
marks.
If this happens, you'll need to see your vet to determine what the cause of their issues might be.
However, there are also actual skin diseases that can develop a dog that will require immediate, in-depth
medical attention.
Major Skin Problems
Here are a few of the major skin problems your dog might suffer from if he is not taken care of carefully right
away.
Hot Spots - Hot spots are patches of redness and swelling that result from an infection on the dog's skin. They
can develop for any number of reasons. The simplest reasons are allergies or agitated biting by your dog.
However, once a dog has developed a hot spot, it needs to be treated quickly. There are antibiotics, but
generally you can treat it by getting your dog to stop licking the spot. Do this with bitter apple spray or cayenne
pepper.
There are also creams that can help reduce the swelling and itching for your dog, keeping them from worrying the
spot and making it worse. If the hot spot continues to grow, you may need to see the vet and get antibiotics or
special cones that will keep the dog from biting or itching.
Skin Cancer
Dogs are also susceptible to melanomas and skin cancers that develop from excess exposure to the sun. These
spots can be hard to pinpoint on your dog, especially if they have long or dark fur. However, many times, the skin
cancers can develop into full blown tumors.
These tumors will stand out on the dog's skin, and may cause the dog to scratch or bite at them excessively. If
you notice any masses or forms on your dog's skin, there are no home treatments. Take them to the vet immediately
for diagnosis.
Dry Skin
Dry skin may seem like a very simple issue, but it can lead to any number of uncomfortable health issues for
your dog. To start with, excess dryness can lead to excess hair loss, damage to the skin and pain around sensitive
areas.
It can also create areas that are prone to developing hot spots and can lead to other infections and skin issues
that can only be treated with medication.
If your dog has dry skin, try to get a moisturizing dog shampoo that will both restore the oils to their coat
and keep the skin from drying out so excessively. You may also consider a humidifier for your home to keep your dog
from getting too dry (it will help you as well).
A dog's skin is just as sensitive and prone to having issues as our own. That can be a big problem, though,
because a dog is unable to tell you 'hey, my skin itches a lot" or "I am having dog moulting issues". You have to not only pay close attention to their discomfort
levels, but you have to take the steps to fix any issues.
Always remember too that if your dog displays any signs of cancer, hot spots, or severe infection, contact your
vet immediately for advanced treatment. Don't mess around with cancer or infection.
